Batteries

You may not know this! That every burglar alarm system has a back up battery that is designed to look after your alarm system in the event of a power cut. Assuming it's in a healthy condition it should last between 8 and 12 hours without the mains electricity.

There are a number of factors that can effect the batteries performance. Heat, cold and most importantly its age.

Q : why do I hear other people's alarms going of when there is a power cut?
A : Due to a lack of maintenance the back up battery will not have been checked or changed in the control panel and will have died.

Q : How often should my alarm battery be changed?
A : For a bells only system it is recommended the battery be changed every 3-4 years

Q : What can happen if the battery has never been checked and has been in longer than 4 years?
A : Alarm batteries have a working life of about 4 years, at some point it will run down and die. The problem is the control panel will try to keep charging a faulty battery. This can lead to the battery getting hot and possibly splitting (at this stage it becomes a fire risk).

Q : What else can happen if the battery dies?
A : In most case's if the battery has been in a faulty condition for some time this will lead to permanent damage to the alarm control box. This means the control panel would need to be replaced.
